‘Start as you mean to continue’ is something rings true for me. I’m not that great at keeping up with new year’s resolutions or things like that. And that’s ok. It’s how I am. I know that’s how I am. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t like to start something with the idea of working towards finishing. I’m an optimist at heart. Sometimes my brain tries to sway me otherwise, but I’m a great ‘starter’ of things.

Which is why I’ve started “a quilt a week” project. Every week this year I plan to finish a quilt. It can be any size, and format, any style. Mostly they will be small and manageable. Some will be fully hand stitched, some will be machine pieced and hand quilted. Some might be machine pieced and not officially quilted as such. I am not setting parameters, and that IS something I’ve learned about myself over the years.

Even if I’m not great at finishing things, there’s more chance I will get through it if the frame-work is more flexible. If I told myself that every quilt had to be made out of my own naturally dyed fabric, or that they all had to be fully hand stitched, or some other rule I set myself. Then I know that those restrictions will bind me too much. It would stop my creativity.

The idea of a quilt a week is simply to explore and see what evolves. And I can’t go through this process if I tell myself in advance what I need to make or create.

So, here’s quilt one. It’s called The Pocket Quilt, because it has little pockets on it from the previous project that it was. I disassembled the fabrics from a little fabric book that I made last year. {Maybe I’ll get better at blogging things / makes this year, but you can see it on IG here and here}.

This quilt does need some little treasure words to put in the pockets. But I might leave that to whoever ends up with it in their home.

I hope you’ll cheer me along with this little project for the year. What I am wondering is - how much would you like to see or be updated about it? Do you want weekly blog posts of the finished quilt, do you want videos (reels on IG), do you want to watch it in the Stitch Circle? I think it will become part of the Stitch Circle paid tiers…. I’m just working out how. Perhaps you’ll let me know your thoughts on this.

I often love the back more than the front

The Pocket Quilt finished with dark blue binding and red stitches.

I finished the quilt with a deep blue binding, which I think pulls it all together.
